Threshold Score

mixed-media installation and performance

FM transmitters, analogue radios, a pair of headphones, with invisible frequencies circulating in between. Interference is introduced into these frequencies; radio signals oscillate between states of distortion, white noise, and clarity, and sound travels between private ears and public ears. What do we care to receive?
The initial impulse for the piece was sparked by the distant, mediated experience of the Ukrainian conflict through news reports in 2022, highlighting the stark contrast in how we, from a place of relative safety and privilege, consume the realities of war.

Threshold Score is part of the artist’s ongoing project researching the politics of listening.

Exhibition

Threshold score 谱/阈 (2024)
15 June - 8 October 2024, ‘Drawer Inside the Bar Lines’, Power Station of Art, Shanghai, China

A performative installation that uses found analogue radio signals and chance interference to explore the threshold between what might be a distant cry, a fabrication, or just noise. The observed states are altered when the observers change proximity in the space, with their bodies creating interference among the random signals.

"Threshold Score" is also a score, a set of instructions for two curators in Shanghai to interpret and execute while I work from London. Their observations shift the state of the installation again.
