1000 Ears is an online live audio performance for one person at a time. It is a collaboration between performance maker Mengting Zhuo, and musician and software engineer Li Song.
Initiated from a feeling of isolation from lockdown, with aims to bring a a different, non-visual perspective and dynamic to online engagement, we devote this online live audio performance to the everyday sounds, noises and sounds that we can perceive while walking through the city.
From their own living room or another location of their choice, the audience embarks on an intimate journey, via a website at their own pace, through various situations that the artists are experiencing at the same time in a different location.
As we walk around London and record live sounds, which is sent directly to the ears of the individual listener through a combination of field recordings and live sound sampling, the audience enters a non-verbal dialogue with the performers.
Each journey in your head will be unique, so as every life we encounter.
The piece is accessible to people with mobility and visibility impairment, and is in line with the social distancing regulations.
Press reviews:
'What is special here is that the listener can determine the pace of the virtual walk himself. [...] Every decision affects the listener's life. In this way, the boundary between producer and consumer is softened and every walk becomes a unique and intimate experience.
[...] The duo succeed in this symbiosis of technology and art. The dissolution of the binary relationship between producer and consumer turns the audio performance into a dynamic and interactive live event.' - Rhein Neckar Zeitung
'These 20 minutes that go by amazingly quickly are a lot more exciting than you might imagine.' - Mannheimer Morgen
This project is developed with support from Arts Council England and Bagri Foundation.
